Conclusion

It can be concluded from this study that vaccination with Vanguard® 7, which contains a CPV2 strain, helps protect dogs against a virulent infection with CPV2c. All vaccinated dogs developed anti-CPV2 titers well above the protective level of 80 after vaccination. Body weights more than doubled in vaccinated animals during the study despite a virulent challenge with CPV2c. Vaccinated animals did not show any abnormal clinical signs or pyrexia either following vaccination or following challenge with CPV2c. White blood cell counts of vaccinated animals did not markedly decrease following challenge. Virus shedding in feces was reduced through vaccination. Therefore, it has been shown that Vanguard® 7 can be used to help protect dogs against CPV2c infection.
